Harvest and Crush Notes
2014 was a year of record-breaking drought in North California. In Suisun Valley the vines had a vigorous start thanks to generous rains in February and March. The rest of the season was dry but with summer temperatures milder than usual. The result was an early veraison and harvest. Yields were slightly lower than in 2013 and 2012 but sugar levels slightly higher. We harvested our Cabernet Sauvignon the first week of October in an ideal fall climate. The quality of the fruit was outstanding. The crush produced a wine of garnet color, intense tannins, rich fruit flavors, and slightly higher than usual alcohol content. A 20-month aging process in French barrels broadened and softened the tannin profile enhancing balance and complexity.
Winemaker’s Notes
The 2014 Contado vintage displays a rich profile of red and black fruit aromas and flavors dressed by an intense deep garnet color robe. Black cherries, plums and blueberries harmonize with caramel, figs, vanilla and eucalyptus tones. Aromas of red and black fruit pleasantly fill the enjoyable nose of the wine to reveal more subtle tones of vanilla, cloves and eucalyptus. Soft tannins combine in a pleasant medium body and lead to an elegant finish. The subtle texture and finish partner remarkably well with slow food without overpowering its taste.
